IN MEMORIAM: JAMES N. SETTLE
James N. Settle, 79, of Alberta, died Friday, Nov. 14, 2008 in Greenville, S.C. He is survived by his wife of 51 years, Evelyn S. Settle, son Kemp N. Settle and wife Kaye of Pickens, S.C., granddaughter Jessica Ford and husband Dan of Stafford, brother Dr. W. K. Settle and wife Bobbie of Sanford, N.C., several nieces and nephews, and grand-dog Norwood. At the time of his retirement, he was Dean of Humanities and The Arts at Hunter College of The University of New York. During his career Dr. Settle had worked for a number of years for the American Council of Learned Societies, a non-profit educational endowment society based in New York City. Dr. Settle attended Wake Forest College, then in Wake Forest, N.C. and UNC at Chapel Hill, where he received his Ph.D. The family will receive friends from 12 noon to 1 p.m. on Saturday, Dec. 13 at Williams Funeral Home, Lawrenceville. A Memorial Service will then be held at 1 p.m. at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the First Christian Church, 704 Edwards Road, Greenville, S.C. 29615, Greenville Humane Society, 328 Furnam Hall Road, Greenville, S.C. 29601 or a charity of your choice.

LATINSUMMER COMING TO WILLIAMSBURG
CALLING HIGH SCHOOL AND COLLEGE LATIN STUDENTS:
Spread your enthusiam for the ancient world to a new generation!
Ascanius: The Youth Classics Institute, a nonprofit organization dedicated to promoting the classical world in the elementary and middle school, is accepting applications for faculty positions at LatinSummer 2009 from now through January 26, 2009. Any high school or college Latin student is welcome to apply. LatinSummer is a two-week long program for students on the elementary and middle school levels. LatinSummer 2009 will run in Williamsburg, Virginia, from July 24 - August 7, 2009. Faculty members earn a small honorarium. All room and board costs, and all or part of travel costs, are paid for by the Institute. For more information or for an application, please visit Ascanius on the web at www.ascaniusyci.org.
MAY 2009 CAV MEETING
AT HAMPDEN-SYDNEY COLLEGE
Hampden-Sydney College will host the spring meeting of the Classical Association of Virginia on Saturday, May 2nd. The program will include three speakers, the announcement of the 2009 CAV Tournament/Essay winners, and the presentation of the annual Lloyd, Todd and Wray Awards. Information and applications about each of the CAV contests and awards are provided in this newsletter, as well as on the association’s website. Please follow criteria and deadlines as noted in submitting these applications.
Speakers for the spring meeting will include a guest speaker from out-of-state, Dr. Jon Solomon, and two Virginia speakers. Dr. Daniella Widdows, Assistant Professor of Classics at Hampden-Sydney, will present on the process of creating animal skins in Greece and how that process was viewed. A second Virginia speaker will be announced via the registration form in March. To conclude the day’s events, H-S College President and Mrs. Bortz have invited all participants to a reception at their home on campus, Middlecourt, following the program.
As an inducement to make your travel to the Farmville area a bit easier, you may want to travel down early and stay over Friday night, May 1st. Information about possible hotels and bed & breakfast accommodations will be posted on our website. Start planning today to attend the CAV in May!
SOLOMON TO VISIT AS GUEST SPEAKER
The 2009 spring meeting of the Classical Association of Virginia will feature as visiting speaker Dr. Jon Solomon of the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, where he is Professor of Classics and Film Studies and holds the Robert D. Novak Chair in Western Civilization and Culture. Dr. Solomon is a distinguished expert in several classical subfields, including Greek music, ancient cookery, and the classical tradition in its various manifestations. Years ago he led the way in studies of the Classics and film with his book The Ancient World and the Cinema, recently revised and updated. He is an award-winning teacher and a dynamic lecturer. Don’t miss his visit. A few years ago Dr. Solomon traveled to Virginia to speak at our fall meeting, which Hurricane Ike forced us to cancel at the last minutes. This May at Hampden-Sydney should prove less challenging weather-wise. Do come, hear, and meet this terrific speaker!

The Spring 2009 meeting will be held on Saturday, May 2 at Hampden-Sydney College in Farmville.
Hampden-Sydney College is offering limited, free accommodations to CAV members who wish to come in the night before the Saturday morning meeting (please contact Janice Siegel at jsiegel@hsc.edu to reserve). The accommodations are in Hampden House, a guest facility on campus. Here are the details (if possible, we would like to avoid putting a single person in a room with two beds):
- Room #1: two single beds, with private bath
- Room #2: two double beds, with private bath
There is a kitchen downstairs.
Rooms are also available at Longwood Bed and Breakfast, in nearby Farmville. Prices are on their website: www.longwood.edu/alumnihouse. They have a limited number of rooms available, and they are very graciously willing to hold them for us until MARCH 15. If you don't make your reservation before then, you will lose out. N.B. THE HAMPTON INN IS ALL BOOKED UP FOR THAT WEEKEND! SO IF YOU WANT TO STAY OVERNIGHT THE NIGHT BEFORE THE MEETING, PLEASE DO TAKE ACTION NOW.

Washington, DC—Luxurious works of art excavated from the opulent houses of the urban elite in Pompeii and from nearby imperial villas along the shoreline of the Bay of Naples illustrate the region’s importance as an artistic center in the first exhibition devoted to ancient Roman art at the National Gallery of Art. The exhibition will premiere in the nation’s capital, October 19, 2008, through March 22, 2009, and travel to the Los Angeles County Museum of Art, May 3 through October 4, 2009. ,I hope this letter finds you well and that the new academic year is going smoothly for you. Much has been happening in Virginia classics in the last couple of months. I hope you have had an opportunity to participate in some of it. First, let me say that we enjoyed a wonderful Fall meeting at UVA in September, and I would like to thank John Miller and Jon Mikalson for all of their help in making the day such a success. If you were unable to attend, you missed three terrific presentations by Eric Casey (Sweet Briar College), Kevin Perry (Governor’s Latin Academy), and Jane Crawford (UVA); all three speakers entertained and enlightened us quite well.
